The Smith Project was initiated by youngculture AG

With the need to migrate a large ColdFusion® based web application – with a few hundred thousand lines of code! - to Java. After having evaluated many different possibilities (rewriting the whole application, using an alternative server such as Blue Dragon) we came to the conclusion to write our own ColdFusion® engine that runs on any Java-enabled platform. This choice proved to be a total success. We are now able to run the whole framework without the need of installing Macromedia's ColdFusion® at all. We have successfully used the engine in different large projects for almost a year now. In the first release we only focused on implementing the tags and functions we were using in our framework. We are quite aware that some important tags and function may be missing. But we have created a proof of concept that our implementation runs very well. And compared to commercial ColdFusion® clones such as Railo and Bluedragon, the ColdFusion® application runs with no errors using our engine!

Originally, we did not plan to release the engine as stand alone product because it was not in youngculture's business strategy to compete with Macromedia or any of the ColdFusion® clone companies. But we think it would be a pity not to make that software available for other developers. So in April 2007 we founded the Smith Open Source Software Association (SOSSA) and made Smith open to any developers.

That’s why we have launched this site. The idea is to make a cross platform Java based ColdFusion® engine available open source at no cost to everyone.

Marco Zoppi, President SOSSA
